All preschools and childcare centers impact a child’s life by allowing them to develop and grow through enriching and challenging activities. We aim to focus on the importance of anti-bias behavior at Otter Learning. At all Otter Learning schools, we provide the resources for children to develop and engage in new skills by prioritizing the significance of anti-bias education so that no child or family feels unwelcome or discriminated against. Our goal is to provide an environment that is welcoming to all, through our focus on anti-bias education and teaching children that all humans should be treated equally and with respect.
What is anti-bias education? Anti-bias education is an approach to learning designed to increase the understanding and appreciation of differences between race, gender, and cultural and religious affiliations. This specific type of education is vital for society today because it enforces the idea in young children that all people should be valued, regardless of their physical appearance. It eliminates any bias or stereotype that a child could develop if he or she is not informed of the differences at a young age. Anti-bias education incorporates a diverse and inclusive curriculum that reflects a variety of experiences and perspectives so that a child does not develop a closed mind. Anti-bias teachers are committed to ensuring that every child is granted the opportunity to grow to their fullest potential in the classroom and in their community. When diversity including race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, language, and culture is not respected, harmful behaviors like bullying and exclusion can emerge. This Anti-Bias source provides an even deeper understanding of the meaning behind anti-bias education.
Our preschools have adapted these ideals by prioritizing equality and inclusion in the classroom through the critical thinking skills that are taught to each child. Every activity or assignment promotes the idea of inclusion by making sure that no child feels alone or left out. All books, pictures, posters, and materials attempt to include diversity so that every child feels comforted and welcomed.
If we can ensure that every child is taught how to view and treat others in a way that is inclusive and lacks bias, we know that our children will help impact the future in a positive way.
